Becoming a Tree
A week-long summer camp for kids at Montalvo Arts Center, Becoming a Tree explored nature, being an individual, and our connections. We walked the forest discussing how trees appear separate but are interconnected below ground by fungi, sharing nutrients and information. Just like humans, who appear separate, but are interconnected in many ways. Students then made 3D self-portraits as fantasy trees. On the final day we created an art installation with all the tree portraits, writing on paper the things that connect us, and stringing them up with yarn into a unified network from tree to tree.
